Cursive scripts, meticulous paintings, masks of Peking Opera, Sun's paper-cuts and inner-painted snuff bottles... Beijing-style traditional culture techniques touch the audience's mind directly in the form of hilarious terms, lightening up the scene of cultural exchange activities. The 5th "Beijing Chaoyang 'Vitalizing Kaohsiung• Vitalizing Pingtung' Stage of Community Culture", co-organized by Federation of Literary and Art Circles of Beijing Chaoyang District, Chaoyang Art Troupe, Kaohsiung City Association of Fellow Townsmen Clubs' Directors and Qingxi General Association, has been held in Taiwan recently.
In the Performing Arts Hall of the Hero House in the Lingya District of Kaohsiung City, artists from China Pingju Theatre, China Oriental Performing Arts Group, China Railway Art Troupe, China Quyi Artists Association, Chinese Chorus Association, Beijing Contemporary Dance Group, Chaoyang Art Troupe and Art Troupes of Chaoyang District, townships and communities have presented the Diabolo performance "The Ambilight", female solo "The Beautiful Grassland, My Home", the crosstalk "Fashion Storytelling", the Kuaiban show "Singing Old Beijing" and many other programs, winning wide applause from over 1,000 local residents.
According to introduction by Jintong, Vice-presiednt and secretary general of the Federation of Literary and Art Circles of Beijing Chaoyang District, the first "Fellow Townsmen club's Director" Chaoyang cultural exchange activity with Beijing style by the Chaoyang District was held in 2015. The cultural exchange activities of "Beijing Chaoyang 'Vitalizing Kaohsiung• Vitalizing Pingtung' Stage of Community Culture", held for three consecutive years in 2016, 2017 and 2018, were widely welcomed by the ordinary people in Taiwan. Each session includes performances, photography exhibitions and display of folk crafts amongst others. Since launching in 2015, the event has been advancing with the times with constant innovation, by carefully selecting a number of literary and artistic projects that reflect traditional charm, capital level and Beijing characteristics.
The photography exhibition this year features "Chaoyang in the lens - Brilliant Chaoyang", reflecting the development and changes that have occurred in Chaoyang during the country's 40 years of reform and opening up in the course of its 6-decade period, and the beautiful moments of cordial communication between the district's exchange groups and compatriots from Kaohsiung and Pingtung. The three folk arts and crafts exhibitions, echoing each other from across the Straits, were held in the Hero House of Lingya District in Kaohsiung, Activity Center of Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology Nanzih Campus, and Ping Rong High School of Pingtung County. Mainland artists and Taiwan compatriots have met face-to-face, exchanging ideas with joint efforts in inheritance of excellent traditional culture heritage. The representative inheritor of intangible cultural heritage Zhao Yongzhen's Peking Opera masks booth, the booth of the fourth generation of the Sun's papercutting inheritor Wang Lei, and the booth of inner painting snuff bottle national fourth-generation inheritor Xie Shanshan were all welcomed by the Taiwan residents. Calligraphers, such as Hou Xiyu also presented their works created at the site to the audiences.
At the Ping Rong High School Student Activity Center, the classic session of Jingyun Dagu "Borrowing Enemy's Arrows" by Zhong Yujie from Beijing Quyi Art Troupe has presented a unique interpretation of the special charm of traditional culture. The "July Torch Festival" by the ensemble of Yi ethnic group from Sanlitun street in Chaoyang District, and "Mirage", the Uighur dance by Luo Xiaoying from Chaoyang Art Troupe demonstrated the folk culture of the Yi and Uygur, allowing the audiences to experience the diversified charms of different ethnic cultures. The "Mask-changing of Sichuan Opera" by Su Liwei, a younger performer of the Chaoyang Art Troupe made a stunning appearance, the alternating changes of the masks made the audience feel the magic and mystery of the special skills at such short distance, bringing up bursts of exclamation. The crosstalk "Controversy between the teaser and the teased" interacted with local audiences winning wide applauses.
"The local people liked Sichuan Opera's mask-changing skills so much. The young Sichuan Opera's mask-changing actor Su Liwei from the Chaoyang Art Troupe interacted with the audiences. They all stood up and wanted to get closer to him. Our designed lottery sessions with meticulous arrangement were also welcomed. The souvenirs form the Beijing Forbidden City, such as round fans and tea coasters were very popular," Jin Tong said.Before the performance, many local people visited each booth happily, all saying that such activities were very meaningful. Everyone in the experience had a deeper understanding of the excellent traditional culture and was looking forward to the activities of the coming year. Local residents who won awards in the lucky draw also said that the small gifts such as round fans and teacups from the Palace Museum of Beijing were beautiful and creative, from which they could feel the unique charm and different kind of affection. The seven folk craftsmen who participated in the interaction accepted the interviews of the local media, introducing the connotations and meanings of their respective artistic creations, and presenting the works of calligraphy, paper-cutting, weaving, inner-painted snuff bottles and Peking Opera masks to the audiences.
Jin Tong said that the exchange activities of "Beijing Chaoyang 'Vitalizing Kaohsiung• Vitalizing Pingtung' Stage of Community Culture" have become not only a well-known cross-Straits cultural exchange brand in the area, but also an important window for Taiwan compatriots to appreciate the Chaoyang style with deeper understanding, narrowing the gap and promoting the connection between compatriots from across the Straits. "As an old saying goes: I haven't seen you for a long time, Once I see you, I will see you again. We must continue to strengthen communication and promote mutual connections. Through colorful and high-quality cultural activities, the people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits will inherit the outstanding traditional Chinese culture, hand in hand and heart to heart, creating a better future," she said.
